The Embera Village and Waterfall Tour
The Embera village and waterfall tour with lunch: the canoe, the walk and the swim, when the stop is skipped, the La Cascada closure, the tours.
The Embera village and waterfall tour is a five-hour day from Panama City: an hour by road to Lake Alajuela, a dugout canoe upriver, a walk up a rocky stream to a jungle waterfall for a swim, then lunch, music and dances at an Embera community. On GetYourGuide it is Panama City: Embera Native Village & Waterfall Tour & Lunch, from $42 in current promotion (usually $65) a person (checked November 2026), plus US$35 per adult (US$15 per child) in cash for the community and park fees. The waterfall is an option you choose when you book.
The calendar above is the village and waterfall day: hotel pickup in the downtown Panama City zone, the canoe, the waterfall on the waterfall option, then the village, with lunch, soft drinks, a bowl of fruit and jagua body paint in the price.
The La Cascada closure (October 2026)
On 27 October 2026 MiAmbiente, Panama’s Ministry of Environment, closed the La Cascada sector of the Chagres River indefinitely, after a landslide on 26 October injured a police officer. Nobody may enter it, Panamanian or foreign, until further notice; the ministry said the rest of Chagres National Park works as normal, and that it would assess whether the earthquake of 9 October played a part (as reported by TVN, El Siglo and Destino Panamá). The reports do not say whether La Cascada is the waterfall your tour visits, and no closure of the villages or of the canoe landing has been reported. Ask the operator through your booking which waterfall the day uses and what replaces it if that sector is shut.
How the waterfall stop works
The canoe leaves Puerto Corotú and runs up the Chagres for about half an hour. It pulls in to the bank, and the group walks to the waterfall, partly along the stream bed: over rocks, through mud and shallow water. The tours put the walk at 5 to 20 minutes, and allow about an hour for the walk, a swim in the pool and photos, before another 20 minutes or so in the canoe to the village.

- Shoes. Water shoes or old trainers with grip. The tours all warn of slippery rocks; flip-flops and sandals come off in the mud.
- Clothes. There is nowhere to change at the waterfall. Wear a swimsuit under your clothes or swim in them, and change at the village, which has bathrooms.
- If you would rather not walk. Some tours let you wait in the canoe with one of the Embera crew; tell the guide at the start.
When the waterfall is skipped
Waterfall stops depend on the river. On Tao Travel 365’s day, high or low water can change or cancel the waterfall stop, and a replacement swim is not guaranteed. Princess Cruises’ own Embera excursion may run 5.5 to 6 hours from February to May because of low river levels, and may use another village when the water is low. A rising Chagres can also stop every trip: on 30 August 2026 MiAmbiente closed the whole park when the river flooded, and reopened it on 1 September. If the waterfall is why you are going, ask the operator a day ahead how the water is.
On the village and waterfall day the waterfall is an option: the same listing sells the village without it, a shorter visit. If what you want is a swim rather than the waterfall itself, Safe Transportation Panama’s Chagres River and Embera village day stops for a long swim in the river instead, from $39 in current promotion (usually $45) (checked November 2026).
