Embera Village or Monkey Island, or Both in One Day?

Embera village or Monkey Island: a canoe to a village on the Chagres or a boat on Gatun Lake, how the days differ, and the tour that does both.

Updated November 2026

An Embera village tour and a Monkey Island tour start from two different lakes about 46 km apart by road: the village canoes leave Puerto Corotú on Lake Alajuela, the Monkey Island boats leave Gamboa on Gatun Lake. The village is a day with people (a canoe ride, a talk, lunch, dances and crafts); Monkey Island is a boat ride to watch monkeys in the trees. You can do both in one day on Safe Transportation Panama’s combined tour, Panama City: Tour to Monkey Island and Embera Village, from $129 a person (checked November 2026), plus US$35 in cash for the village and park.

The calendar above is the combined day: six and a half hours with pickup in downtown Panama City, about two hours with an Embera community in Chagres National Park, then 45 to 50 minutes by road to Gamboa and an hour and a half by boat on Gatun Lake.

Monkey Island is a cluster of small islands in Gatun Lake, the reservoir that carries ships across the isthmus; boats watch the monkeys in the trees from the water. The operators name white-faced capuchins, mantled howlers and Geoffroy’s tamarins. For the standalone boat tours from Gamboa, prices and the best time of day, monkeyislandtourpanama.com covers Monkey Island in depth.

Doing both in one day

On the combined tour the village comes first, in the morning; Gamboa and the lake come after. The road between the two landings is about 46 km, an hour without traffic by a route planner’s count; the listing allows 45 to 50 minutes. The combined day runs about six and a half hours from pickup to drop-off.

What it leaves out: a waterfall swim and lingering in the village. You get about two hours with the community instead of three. If the village is the point of your trip, book a village day and do Monkey Island separately; if you want a taste of both and have one day, the combined tour does it with one pickup.

Which one, for whom

  • Travelling with children who need to stay dry and seated: Monkey Island, or the village without the waterfall walk.
  • Interested in people more than wildlife: the village, on a day that names it, such as Jhaline Tours’ day at Emberá Tusipono from $42 in current promotion (usually $60) (checked November 2026).
  • One free day and curious about both: the combined tour.
  • On a cruise: check pickup first: the combined day picks up from hotels in downtown Panama City, so ask Safe Transportation Panama about the port before you book, and the road between the two lakes takes time.
