The Day
What an Embera Village Tour Is Like
Where the canoes go, what happens in the village, what you pay in cash, and how to pick a tour.
An Embera village tour is a day trip from Panama City to one of the Embera communities on the Chagres River, inside Chagres National Park. A vehicle takes you about an hour north to Lake Alajuela, Embera boatmen take you upriver in a long dugout canoe, and the community welcomes you with music, a talk about Embera life, lunch and dances. The village and waterfall version adds a swim at a jungle waterfall, from $42 in current promotion (usually $65) a person (checked November 2026), plus a community and park fee of US$35 per adult paid in cash.
Before you book (November 2026): on 27 October 2026 Panama’s Ministry of Environment, MiAmbiente, closed the La Cascada sector of the Chagres River indefinitely after a landslide the day before, and said every other part of Chagres National Park runs as normal. The reports do not say whether La Cascada is the waterfall a given tour visits, so ask the operator when you book; no closure of the villages or of the canoe landing has been reported.
The short answer
For a first visit with the least to arrange, book the village and waterfall day, sold on GetYourGuide as Panama City: Embera Native Village & Waterfall Tour & Lunch. Pickup is from hotels in the downtown Panama City zone, the canoe takes about half an hour, the waterfall stop comes first on the waterfall option, and the day in the village includes lunch of tilapia or chicken with patacones and fruit, and jagua body paint. It runs about five hours, from $42 in current promotion (usually $65) a person, with 2,306 reviews (checked November 2026). The Embera community and Chagres National Park fees, US$35 per adult and US$15 per child, are paid in cash on the day.
Check dates for the village and waterfall tour
If you would rather spend longer on the river, Safe Transportation Panama’s seven-hour day trades the waterfall for a long stop to swim in the Chagres and a conversation with one of the village’s leaders: see the Chagres River and Embera village day, from $39 in current promotion (usually $45) (checked November 2026).

Where the tours go
The Embera communities that receive day visitors sit on the banks of the Chagres River where it flows into Lake Alajuela, the reservoir behind Madden Dam, inside Chagres National Park. The tours meet the canoes at Puerto Corotú, a landing on the lake reached through Chilibre, which Panama’s tourism authority names as the way in. From there the canoe goes up the river to one of several villages; the listings name Emberá Tusipono, Emberá Drúa and, on other days, Parará Purú.

Most tours do not tell you in advance which village you will visit, and some switch village when the river is low. If one community matters to you, book a listing that names it: Jhaline Tours’ day goes to the Emberá Tusipono community, and Jose Acevedo’s to Emberá Drúa.
How the day runs
Pickup is in the morning, usually around 8 am. Puerto Corotú is about 39 km by road from Casco Viejo, some 46 minutes without traffic; the listings allow about an hour. At the landing you climb into a long, motorised dugout canoe, the piragua, crewed by Embera boatmen. The ride up the Chagres takes 20 minutes to an hour, depending on the village and the water.
On a waterfall tour, the canoe stops on the way for a walk up a rocky stream bed to a waterfall, where you can swim. The path is wet and slippery, and there is nowhere to change, so wear your swimsuit under your clothes and water shoes on your feet. The Embera village and waterfall tour has the details, and when the waterfall is skipped.
In the village, the community meets the boat with music, someone explains how the Embera live on the river, and lunch is served: fried fish, usually tilapia, or chicken with patacones (fried green plantain) and a plate of fruit. Then there are dances, which visitors are often invited to join, time at the families’ craft tables and the chance to have a design painted on your skin in jagua, a plant dye. What a visit to an Embera village is like goes through the afternoon and where your money goes.

| Jagua painting | Included on the village and waterfall day; otherwise a few dollars | Cash |
MiAmbiente’s Chagres tariff (Resolution DM-0013-2024) and the tours’ listings, November 2026.
A few tours put the fees in the price: Monkey Adventures Panama’s Tusipono day with the entrances included at $107, and on Viator, Riko Tours’ day with all fees and taxes included, from $155 a person for two or more (checked November 2026). Bring small US dollar bills either way: Panama uses the US dollar, with balboa coins at the same value.
The Embera on the Chagres
The Embera are one of Panama’s seven Indigenous peoples; in the 2023 census 51,657 people identified as Embera, the third-largest Indigenous group in the country. Their home territory, the Comarca Emberá, was created in Darién in 1983. The villages on the Chagres are not part of it: families from Darién began settling on the river in the 1970s, and when Chagres National Park was created in 1984 to protect the water supply of the canal and the cities, farming and logging on its land were restricted. Tourism became the main income of the river communities, and their request for a collective land title was still waiting on MiAmbiente’s approval in 2025, because the land lies in a protected area.
A University of Panama study at Emberá Drúa found that a community cooperative manages the money from visits and that each family keeps what its crafts earn. What to bring covers shoes, cash and the plastics ban, and the road from Panama City the drive, cruise days and timing. If you are deciding between the village and the monkeys on Gatun Lake, Embera village or Monkey Island compares them and the tour that does both.

Embera Village Tour: Questions
The price and the cash fee, the distance from Panama City, the waterfall, what happens in the village, what to bring, and Monkey Island.
From about US$40 a person, plus a fee in cash. The village and waterfall day with lunch is $42 on GetYourGuide (checked November 2026) and the Chagres River day $39 (checked November 2026). Most tours add an Embera community and Chagres National Park fee of US$35 per adult, paid in cash to the guide; a few, such as the tour that includes the entrances at $107, build it into the price.
About 39 km by road to the canoes, then a river ride. From Casco Viejo to Puerto Corotú on Lake Alajuela is about 39 km by road, some 46 minutes without traffic; the tours allow about an hour. The dugout canoe then takes 20 minutes to an hour, depending on the village and the river. See getting there from Panama City.
Entry to the Embera community and to Chagres National Park, in the listings' words. The tour operators collect it in cash, usually at pickup, and none publishes the split. MiAmbiente's own park fee for a foreign visitor is B/.5.00 (US$5), paid through the ministry's online procedures after registering at the park; the Chagres communities say it is charged outside their own package, so ask your operator whether it pays the park fee for you. See Chagres National Park.
Check with your operator. On 27 October 2026 Panama's Ministry of Environment closed the La Cascada sector of the Chagres indefinitely after a landslide on 26 October; it said the rest of the park runs as normal. The reports do not say whether that sector is the waterfall your tour visits, and high or low water can also shorten or move the waterfall stop. See the village and waterfall tour.
A welcome with music, a talk about Embera life, lunch, dances and time at the craft tables. Lunch is usually fried fish or chicken with patacones and fruit. Families sell their own baskets and carvings, and young painters offer jagua body paint, a plant dye that fades in about a week. See what a visit is like.
Some of it, through a cooperative. A University of Panama study at Embera Drua (fieldwork 2019-20) found that operators passed on about US$20 to US$25 a visitor, managed by a cooperative that pays the people who work the visits, while each family keeps what it earns from its own crafts. Buying crafts and paying for jagua go straight to the family that made or painted them.
Water shoes, a swimsuit under your clothes, a change of clothes, sun protection and small US dollar bills. The way to the waterfall is wet and rocky, there is nowhere to change at the waterfall, and the fee, the crafts and the jagua are paid in cash. Plastic bottles and bags are banned in Panama's protected areas from 2026. See what to bring.
Yes, on a combined tour. Safe Transportation Panama's day takes the canoe to an Embera village first, then drives about 46 km to Gamboa for a boat on Gatun Lake to the monkey islands: $129 on GetYourGuide (checked November 2026). See Embera village or Monkey Island.
Any month, with trade-offs. The upper Chagres is driest from January to March and wettest in November and December. In the dry months low water can shorten the canoe ride or change the village; in the wet months a rising river can stop trips, as it closed the whole park from 30 August to 1 September 2026.
